De longs fils de cire entortillés
A Long Cord Of Twisted Wax
Every year for the past three years, the Basque association Haran Ubel has invited artists, graphic designers or collectives to take up residency and produce a fanzine or book based on interviews with residents of the Aldudes valley and surrounding area. Printed in risography at the end of the residency by Mari Campistron in the village of Les Aldudes, the edition is produced in the place where the texts were collected.
This year, Haran Ubel has invited graphic artist Aglaë Miguel, who since 2020 has been interested in mourning waxes, candles made from a long cord of beeswax skilfully twisted around itself. Their intricate craftsmanship, woven shapes and many uses were commonplace at Pyrenean funerals and funeral ceremonies until the early 20th century.
The result of a series of interviews conducted in the Basque Country in the spring of 2023, this edition highlights the words of Aldudes valley residents, ethnologists, beekeepers and spun-wax artisans, who together weave a polyphonic and resilient memory of this surviving artifact.
With original photographs by Charles Thiefaine and Jennifer Lachartre.
