A wide-ranging discursive study of the cultural geography of the Central European avant-garde between the wars.

This richly illustrated book presents the artistic emulation that took place in Central Europe between the two world wars, challenging the “centre-periphery” concept that has long prevailed in art history. Rather than taking a strictly chronological or geographical approach, the author offers an overview of the exchanges between different centers, due in particular to the mobility of artists and the circulation of ideas via the printed media. The notion of international communication is at the heart of this project. The study, based on research carried out over several years in various countries, emphasises the transdisciplinarity and versatility of artists, their curiosity about new forms of expression and new creative technologies. It sketches out a broad territory with blurred borders, where a collective utopian project was built up over a period of some twenty years.

Sonia de Puineuf (born 1976 in the former Czechoslovakia) is a historian of art, architecture and graphic design.
