Alice Rohrwacher - Le vrai du faux
Alice Rohrwacher in conversation with Eva Markovits and Judith Revault d'Allonnes
This book accompanied the event "Alice Rohrwacher, Dreaming Between Worlds," presented from 1 December 2023 to 1 January 2024 at the Centre Pompidou, consisting of a complete retrospective of her films and the exhibition "Bar Luna," designed by the filmmaker with the Muta Imago company and the participation of florist Thierry Boutemy.
"It's beautiful to identify with others, but you also have to be able to take the viewer in the other direction. Not identifying, but respecting, for example, another culture. We mustn't think that everyone shares our worldview, that everything is accessible to us. There are many ways to connect with the world and with stories. At least we, who in a world so full of images produce others, must have confidence in the power of the gaze."
Alice Rohrwacher recounts the making of her first four feature films, Corpo celeste, The Wonders, Happy as Lazzaro and The Chimera, revealing what goes on behind the scenes.
From writing to editing, all stages are discussed using sequences that crystallise many of the issues at stake.
This discussion highlights the filmmaker's search for immaterial truths through fiction, the access it provides to the extras of being and the world – such as dreams, which are individual, and tales, myths and popular songs, which are collectively shared, and which Alice Rohrwacher is equally fond of; but also the constant back-and-forth between life and the films that form the basis of her practice, her attachment to the craft of cinema and its forms, and the importance of the troupe as a family.
