“A vast artery crosses the screen — a typical Los Angeles roadway. It could be Santa Monica, Beverly, or even Sunset Boulevard, as these roads all share the same face, the same functions. They structure the city, outline its morphology, and shape its identity. They form an endless continuity, a closed and uniform universe. On this landscape, the name Columbo appears in a yellow intertitle. It overlays a glass-structured building — a building that houses a gym surrounded by windows. The clients, men dressed in the same blue uniform, strive to sculpt their bodies while displaying themselves to everyone’s gaze. In the middle of this glass prison, the title of the episode appears: An Exercise in Fatality.”
Nearly forty years after its broadcast, two anachronistic fans, François-Michel Allegrini and Thomas James, dissect the 26th episode of the cult series Columbo, first aired in the early summer of 1975. From their shared fascination was born a hybrid work — somewhere between fetish object, essay, investigation, and autopsy.
