Bettina Henni - Gròs Santoun
Gròs Santoun is an illustrated book about rural Provence. Like a small intimate encyclopedia of daily life, Bettina Henni has collected, through her drawings, objects and figures related to popular traditions, nature, craftsmanship, and rural life. Each object, drawn on a base, is accompanied by its name in Provençal: a bit like a catalogue of santons ! (Christmas statuettes) A catalogue of objects which makes the reader dive into the imagination of Provence - home of artisans, pickers, farmers, and more.
"These objects are those that surround me. Gathered together, they speak of plant pickers, distillery, the friends and companions - sheperds, farmers, brewers, carpenters, potters, stone workers, plasterers, etc. Intimate objects that still embrace the hand of Man, reflecting his relationship to tools, craftsmanship, the pleasures of making, and being connected to materials, techniques, the environment, the surroundings and life. From the santons (nativity figures), I retain not only a description of Provence, through its trades and the roles of each person, but also, and above all, the ritual: collecting, gathering the scenery, moss, bark, and adding characters. I like that everything is at the same level: trees, plants, objects, people, animals, tools - because all these things tell a story!"
Bettina Henni
Born in 1984 in Nice, Bettina Henni currently lives and works in Saint-Ferréol-Trente-Pas, in the Drôme region.
