浮雲 Nuages Flottants is a documentary on Japanese bathing culture by César Debargue & Luna Duchaufour-Lawrance

"There are places in Japan that have no equivalent in France: Sentô, urban public baths popular with the masses. At the end of the day, people bathe there completely naked, separated by gender, in an ingenious succession of hot, cold, foamy, electrified or scented baths. Much more than just places for washing and relaxation, sentō are essential to the Japanese social fabric, where one can experience hadaka no tsukiai: the idea that simply sharing the same space, naked, allows people to bond and communicate openly, erasing social and cultural differences. Despite their deep roots in Japanese society, sentō are now facing great difficulties, forcing many establishments to close their doors each year and leading to their slow disappearance.

To better understand the decline and future challenges facing these places, we spent three months immersing ourselves in Japanese baths in Kyoto, Tokyo and Kyushu, meeting, interviewing and photographing those who are perpetuating and reinventing the sentō.
