In the summer of 1999, I was ready to leave home after school but not quite ready to begin my adult life in Los Angeles. My psychological compromise was a three month stint working on a ranch in Wyoming, an hour's drive from the Continental Divide which separates the American West from my native East Coast.

Entertainment at the ranch consisted mostly of visiting the neighboring hamlet's three bars, but once a month the town of Riverton an hour's drive east arranged a demolition derby in the local rodeo rink. It was the county's main event, and people would flock from all four corners of nowhere for an evening of Pepsi, Coors Light, popcorn, and dilapidated cars bashing each other to destruction, the contemporary equivalent of a Roman gladiator event. The images found here and within the book were all shot over the course of one evening at the fairgrounds, a quarter century ago.
