Richard McGuire - Listen
Listen is an audio book, a graphic score that captures everyday sounds across 32 pages: a dog barking, the radio, a car door slamming… a few seemingly insignificant sounds among those that punctuate our days.
During the first lockdown, Richard McGuire left the heart of New York City to move to Beacon, a small, peaceful town north of New York, surrounded by nature. “There are 11 windows in my house, which allows me to pick up sounds coming from all directions. That’s where the sounds in Listen come from. Having lived in the city for so long makes you hypersensitive to all the sounds of the countryside; it’s as if they were amplified. That’s the starting point for this book, but there’s also the idea of graphically encoding sounds—it’s a subject that’s always interested me.”
